Evan Johnson Anthology Disc Three

Disc three features 3 keyboard based instrumentals, 10 guitar based instrumentals, and various takes and versions of 32 songs with lyrics.

1. He's Not My Brother (take 2) (incomplete)
A somewhat more complete take with an effective spoken backing vocal.
2. Cast Your Stones
3. Drunken Walking Punchy (Deja Vu) (keyboard instrumental 29)
A soulful drum machine drives this groove based number
4. You're Such A Genius
A more developed vocal version of track 3. I wish it went "should I laugh or should I choke". This promising song fades out after a single verse.
5. I'm Takin' A Walk! (guitar instrumental 8)
The drum machine use is becoming more and more effective. I think this must be a new, more programmable drum machine. I like the unexpected chord changes.
6. Would I Recognize?
A more developed vocal version of track 5.
7. Hush, Hush Child (later "Hush, Hush Darlin'") (take 1)
Fans of How Could I Know will recognize this early version of Hush, Hush Darlin'. A keyboard solo ends the song. The "I can't believe" bridge section is absent.
8. At Home Waiting (guitar instrumental 9)
9. One And One (take 1 - incomplete snippet)
10. One And One (take 2)
11. I Don't Care Tonight
This would-be '70s rock classic shares some lyrics and sentiments with "You've Heard Those Words Before".
12. Your Kung Fu is Very Gentle (keyboard instrumental 30)
13. Dark Into the Day
14. Been A Long Time
A chant-like meditation on the title
15. Guitar Instrumental #10 (guitar instrumental 10)
16. You've Heard Those Words Before (take 2)
Another try at one of Evan's best songs. I love playing bass on this song live.
17. Descent of the Twist (guitar instrumental 11)
18. Child, Run Away
The singer is acknowledging his flaws and warning someone to avoid him.
19. All That I Have Seen
Some quick lyrics about transformation
20. The Long Gone
A quirky, rhythmic bass line and backing vocals contribute to this song.
21. Now's The Time
A dark song about ending a relationship
22. Boodle (guitar instrumental 12)
A rhythm guitar mistake ends this pretty song.
23. Funky Drummer Machiner (drum machine instrumental 1)
24. I Once In The Minor Highlands (guitar instrumental 13)
25. Hey, No Thanks
In attitude, a forerunner to "Real Rocket Man" in which everybody thinks they know better than the singer.
26. Bored of the Spring
This song ends with a funny little mumble.
27. From You To Me (take 1)
A rare whistling solo distinguishes this song.
28. From You To Me (take 2) (cuts off abruptly)
The whistling solo goes to the keyboard. Several overdubs, including double tracking of the vocal, contribute to the relatively complete feeling of this take.
29. The Movies
Real life is not so glamorous in this very personal, sad song.
30. So Many Things (take 1)
31. Starlight (take 1)
Some nice instrumental sections contribute to this meditation on stars and loss.
32. Starlight (take 2/alternate version)
Lyrics are about all that remain the same from the previous version.
33. My Most Excellent And Good Friend
The opening two lines echo "The Sound of Silence". A mild flanging effect on the vocal contributes to this bittersweet song of loss and recrimination. The instrumental section features some Memphis Evans like wailing. This is one of the more fully developed songs so far, clocking in at about three and a half minutes. This song could be combined with "The Littlest Things Get In The Way" to make a very effective, catchy song!
34. Hard Times
Tempo changes and a mild delay effect on the vocal. A guitar solo ends the song.
35. Shenandoah (cover song)
Evan double tracks his vocal and finds interesting, effective chords to create a fresh arrangement of this traditional song.
36. The Struggle (keyboard instrumental 31)
37. Love Can Do That (take 1)
A variety of keyboard songs trade solo sections with the acoustic guitar before this song fades out.
38. Didn't I? (a.k.a. Roundup) (guitar instrumental 14)
39. Lookin' At (take 1)
40. Lookin' At (take 2)
Some slight revisions make this the more complete and effective take of this song idea.
41. Love Can Do That (take 2)
An opening whistling solo makes this take interesting before it abruptly ends with a few notes trailing off on the guitar.
42. Badatndau (guitar instrumental 15) (w/wordless vocal)
43. Now She's Home (guitar instrumental 16)
Multi-layered acoustic guitars make this song interesting before it ends abruptly
44. How To (take 1)
45. How To (take 2)
New lyrics make this take more complete.
46. The Decision (guitar instrumental 17)
This fingerpicked piece is interesting but ends abruptly
47. Sounds Like
Evan makes his harmonica debut on this song.
48. (5 blank seconds)
49. Move Along
A percussive guitar scraping makes this propulsive little song interesting before it ends abruptly
50. Ashes to Ashes (take 1)
A brief fragment more completely documented on disc four.
