One House

Fun fact: This song was written *at* one of the houses the narrator is singing about! The good one, obvs.

The Stephen King book Desperation and the Richard Bachman book The Regulators are weird twin pieces of art. So too are One House and The End of the Skies. I wrote them around the same time, 1998 or so. I started making recordings of them, I played them live by myself a couple times, then I kinda left them, never finishing the recordings or proposing them for whatever bands I've been in since. I finished them and added speedy, melodic, very intentionally composed and heavily practiced fingerpicked guitar solos a la David Gilmour. I'm very pleased with the way they are now.

Oh, also they both mention a red door. Does anyone else remember the Red Door Clinic?

Fun game: Guess which one was actually sung in 1998 and which one still lacked a lead vocal and was sung in 2022!

Lyrics:

One House faces West in town
One House faces East
One House holds the keys to the kingdom
and one the mark of the beast, Lord
one the mark of the beast

One House rises towards the sun
One House falls away
One House gets the best of me
One House is where I stay, Lord
One House is where I stay

One House's door is painted red
One is painted black
Once you leave your house and home,
you'll never make it back, Lord,
you'll never make it back.

One House will stand forever here
One House is fallin' down
Thing that you must understand -
There's just one house in town, Lord
There's just one house in town

One House faces West in town
One House faces East
One House holds the keys to the kingdom
and one the mark of the beast, yeah
one the mark of the beast

Next song: The End of the Skies
