(Not a) Baseball Man has its origins in an unfinished rock opera about the Minnesota Twins' 1987 World Series victory. The events in the song are fictional, but I did later come to enjoy baseball and the Metrodome very much.

Trip Shakespeare, Hüsker Dü, and Andy's various groups with Quinn, Addington, Blood, Mortimer, Selisker, Ferguson, etc. were a whole new genre of music to me after growing up mostly on the East Coast and coming to a small Minnesota town for college. (Not a) Baseball Man may be the apex Minnesota power pop/rock song in my personal pantheon, especially once I actually started going to games at the Metrodome. People crabbed about it to no end, but I LOVED it. "That Metrodome sky" won the Twins many a game as opposing fielders lost sight of the white baseball in the white roof.
