In November of 2003 Dave Addington brought an embryonic version of this song to the group Honigman for consideration. We loved it and it became the best original generated by the band. I borrowed some phrases from Megan Bell painting titles, improvised others while playing with the band, and thought of some while driving on Highway 169 through Edina.
Everyone had a hand in creating the music so this is the rare song that truly has six authors.
When I made this 2022 version I was intending to try to replicate Kent's drum parts with MIDI programming. That turned out to be extremely frustrating and impossible. I just left it as the click track I used to record guitars to. Kent's drumming on this, available on Honigman bootlegs, is truly a master class in building tension and release through and within various sections of a rock song.
I also did not try to learn and replicate Andy's swooping, melodic bass parts. Ideally, I would rent a studio and Kent and Andy would play their parts over this recording.
I love this song so much that instead of going direct with my electric guitar and using amp simulating software, I took the time to set up my amp and microphones to try to get the guitar just the way it sounded in the band. That much I think I got very right.
